The DATA

EVERYONE should be SHOCKED at the general recent rise in suicide across the nation, but especially at a 56% rise in adolescent suicide since 2007. The links below take you to statistics demonstrating the rise in suicide in general and for youth. Some states such as Utah had 140% rise over the past four years. This is too significant to "blame" on "high altitude" as some have suggested. The "high altitude" excuse is simply avoiding the true root  cause of suicide... SUFFERING in response to our society. The rate rising is a direct reflection of the world we have created... a world which clearly cares more about money and profit over human well-being. Those who blame it on mental illness are simply passing the buck. With or without any predisposition, mental illness is brought on in response to or triggered by the environment. Societies which prioritize human well-being have a much lower suicide rate. Ours does NOT! Most efforts to alieve suffering are simply a bandaid and do not address the root issue. This will NEVER change until we are prepared to look more deeply and honestly at our priorities and how that defines the structures of our society.

While there is powerful information demonstrating the high risks faced by LGBTQIA youth, the reality is likely much worse because schools, in general, are lacking qualitative surveying including this aspect of student sense of safety and well being.  Further, most death certificates don't track gender identity or sexual orientation information. Below are a collection of links to important data, but it still incomplete. If you know of sites which should be included, please send me an email with a link! We are building, sharing and connecting information together. Thank you!
